Describe the job before comparing proposals
Set out the property type, location and intended result. For a fault, describe the symptoms. For planned work, identify the rooms and changes. For an inspection, explain why you need it and whether a particular report has been requested.
Citizens Advice, a consumer advice organisation, recommends choosing suitable traders, comparing written quotes and checking insurance for home improvement work in England. Its home improvement guidance (citizensadvice.org.uk) also recommends discussing scope, materials, timing and costs before commitment.
The service overview helps separate repair, installation and inspection requirements.
Discuss competence for the actual work
Electrical work needs appropriate competence. Ask who would carry out the work and how their competence relates to the job you have described.
The Health and Safety Executive, the workplace safety regulator, establishes that requirement in its guidance on electricity (hse.gov.uk). Keep the discussion tied to the proposed work, rather than relying on a general description.
For home improvement work, include the insurance check recommended by Citizens Advice. This is a separate purchasing question from the technical assessment of the electrical job.
Agree the work in writing
For home improvement work in England, Citizens Advice recommends a written contract. Discuss what is included, the materials, timing and costs before agreeing to proceed.
You can use your enquiry to identify decisions that still need discussion. Relevant questions include:
- What electrical work is included in the proposed scope?
- Which fittings and materials are included?
- What timing is proposed?
- What costs are included in the written quote?
If your project includes an inspection, name the report requested. If it includes repairs, describe the fault rather than deciding the technical solution in advance. Permission and building-control requirements depend on the work, so avoid assuming that every electrical task has identical requirements.
Explain project timing
Include your preferred dates and any dependency on building work, access or a property handover. Identify which arrangements are already made and which remain open.
